Airline Pilot Hiring
June 2008 Summary
![]() |
The second quarter of ’08 came to a close this past month and brought with it 1,840 new pilot jobs, for a YTD total of 5,061 down by approximately 1,120 pilot positions from the second quarter in ‘07. The National airlines took back their lead in hiring for the month and added a total of 676 pilot jobs for the quarter. The Major carriers were second with 396 pilots, followed by Non-Jet Operators with 343 and the Fractional sector finished fourth with 149 new pilot jobs for the quarter. The number of pilots currently furloughed increased slightly from 2,144 at the end of the first quarter to 2,036 at the end of the second. Unfortunately this number will continue to rise through the remainder of the year.
On June 18, 2008 Gemini Air Cargo filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Fifty pilots and 28 flight engineers were furloughed, leaving 104 mainline and staff pilots. The Virginia-based carrier operates a fleet four MD-11Fs (parked all DC-10s in 2007).
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said that global airlines could lose as much $6.1 billion this year, due to current oil prices. The U.S. DOT said domestic airlines lost $1.3 billion in the first quarter of 2008. Fuel accounted for 30 percent of airlines’ operating costs, up from almost 5 percent five years ago.
United and Continental said they have formed an agreement that would allow them to boost revenue and lower costs. The agreement will allow ticketing between the two airlines and calls for Continental to switch to United's Star Alliance from the SkyTeam alliance. The alliance needs regulatory approval, which may take up to one year.
US Airways, Continental, United, AirTran and Comair all announced that they will be furloughing pilots. After the peak summer season ends US Airways said it will furlough 300 pilots (6% of their pilot staff). This equates to 175 pilots from the US Airways “East” side and 125 from the America “West” side. Continental will lay-off 300 pilots (six percent of their current pilot force). United announced it will be furloughing 14% of their pilots, up to 950 crewmembers, with the first “pink slips” arriving in September. Up to 180 pilots will lose their jobs at AirTran and Comair announced early July that it intends to send 300 pilots “pink slips” in September.
The next AIR, Inc. Job Fair will be held in Washington, D.C. at the Hyatt Regency Reston Hotel on August 23. For information on all current and future seminars visit our Web site at www.jet-jobs.com, or call 800 JET-JOBS (538-5627).
