AIR, Inc.

94 of the 179 airlines reporting to AIR, Inc. hired 569 pilots in the month of May. This is the first time since AIR, Inc. started tracking airline pilot hiring that the Non-Jet carriers have lead in hiring and only the third time the National carriers have not, but only by a narrow margin, hiring 173 and 171 pilots respectively. The Major sector, with only three of the 15 carriers hiring pilots, still managed to come in third adding 102 to their flight decks. The number of pilots currently furloughed continues to decrease from 2,111 in April to 2,036 in May. AIR, Inc. forecasts approximately 8,500 new airline pilot jobs for 2008.

US Airways and United Airlines (UAL) have cancelled their merger negotiations. Both carriers said they will remain independent. UAL is presently currently negotiating an alliance contract with Continental Airlines.

DHL signed a 10-year contract with UPS effective the end of 2008. UPS will provide air transportation for all domestic and international shipments within North America. The contract could yield an additional $1billion a year in revenues for UPS.

The deal will also have a profound impact on ABX Air since DHL provides virtually all of the cargo carrier’s revenue. DHL informed ABX that over the next 18 months they would be removing 39 of their 74 DC-9s currently in operation. ABX said the deal could result in the loss of approximately 6,000 jobs. AIR, Inc. estimates that the loss of aircraft could force the carrier to furlough approximately 240 pilots their jobs.

Miramar-based Spirit Airlines is furloughing 242 pilots in August and closing its bases in LaGuardia and San Juan. It is also reducing operations in Fort Lauderdale. Spirit also said it will also be laying off 448 flight attendants.
