Airline Pilot Hiring
April 2008 Summary
![]() |
759 pilots were hired in April by 112 of the 185 Airlines reporting to AIR, Inc. National airlines hired 307 crewmembers, while the major carriers, despite several recently suspended hiring, still managed to hold the number two spot adding 222 pilots to their sector. Non-jet Operators put 86 pilots into their flight decks and the Fractional carriers finished in fourth adding an additional 75. Overall furlough numbers dropped slightly, from 2,144 pilots in March to 2,111 in April. AIR, Inc. predicts 8,500 new pilot jobs for 2008!
Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines announced their merger plans on April 14. Delta pilots have already approved a pre-merger contract, but Northwest pilots feel they may not be getting the better part of that deal if they agree to it. Shortly after Continental Airlines said it would remain a stand-alone carrier, United and US Airways announced that they were in the “advanced stages” of merger talks.
Frontier Airlines and its subsidiary, Lynx Aviation, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on April 11. The carrier’s principal credit card processor announced that it intended to start withholding significant proceeds received from the sale of tickets. Frontier and Lynx said that they would continue to operate their normal flight schedule during the restructuring period. Additionally, Eos Airlines, which offered premium class service on flights between New York and London, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on April 27 and ceased all operations on Monday, April 28. The news came on the heels of an announcement it made on April 19 that outlined the details of a $50 million “term sheet” it had secured from one of its investors. Eos, which operated a fleet of six B757-200s, laid-off 70 pilots.
US Airways Votes in New Union
On April 17 US Airways’ pilots elected a new union, the US Airline Pilots Association. Ninety-five percent of the eligible 5,238 pilots cast a ballot with 2,723 voting in favor of new representation and 2,254 choosing to stay with their former union, the Air Line Pilots Association. Approximately 500 pilots from the America West side of the carrier ruled for USAPA.
