Airlines reporting to AIR, Inc. hired 3,167 pilots in the first quarter of 2008 – an increase of 424 pilot jobs from this time last year. National airlines hired 450 crewmembers, majors added 207, Non-jet Operators put 113 pilots into their flight decks and Jet Operators added an additional 40. Other airlines added an additional 156. Furlough numbers continue to drop, from 2,491 pilots in February to 2,144 in March.

The high cost of jet fuel prices caused ATA, Aloha, Skybus and Skyway to shut down operations. Champion Air announced that will cease operations at the end of May. Frontier Airlines filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection but said it will continue to operate normally during the restructuring period. Midwest and Sun Country will furlough 35 and 45 pilots respectively.

International Air Transport Association (IATA) warned that there may be a severe global pilot shortage "unless industry and government work together to change training and qualification practices. Newly released estimates forecasts that the industry may need 17,000 new pilots annually due to expected industry growth and retirements.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is forecasting that the number of commercial aircraft in the U.S. fleet will grow to 12,202 by the year2025, increasing at an average rate of 2.5% from the 2007 level of 7,816. Commercial fleets will see a net gain of 92 aircraft this year and 80 in 2009 with the majority growth generated by low-cost carriers.

Pilots wanting to relocate to India and China will be in high demand in the next 10 years. China will need 1,900 to 2,000 more pilots a year for the next 10 years. India will need up to 900 pilots per year.
