Airline Pilot Hiring – November '00 Summary

Airline pilot hiring continued at record levels in November with 1,522 new jobs for the month. The rate of hiring will produce approximately 19,599 pilot jobs in 2000. AIR, Inc.’s 2000 hiring forecast predicts 4,875 new jobs at the majors, 6,800 at the nationals, and 19,599 new pilot jobs overall in ‘00.

In November, 181 of the 212 total (85%) airlines/operators reporting to AIR, Inc. hired pilots. The major airlines hired 360 pilots with 13 of the 14 (93%) carriers hiring. The national airlines were the most active, 28 of 35 (80%) hired a total of 537 new pilots. The jet operators hired 222, the fractional companies hired 82, and the non-jet operators hired 261 new pilots.

At the end of November, the total number of pilots on furlough remained unchanged at 609 (.68% of 89,869 active airline pilots). Continental pilots, represented by the IACP, and CAL announced they will start contract talks in October 2001. Atlantic Coast Airlines ordered 27 CRJs worth $594M. The Air Line Pilots Association’s DAL unit and Delta management have jointly requested federal mediation. Pilots at Sun Country Airlines, also represented by ALPA, have filed for mediation as well.

The Southwest region Airline Pilot Career Seminar, Airline Forum, and Job Fair will be held in Dallas, TX, at the Sheraton Grand Hotel (DFW), Saturday, Jan. 20. Airlines invited to attend include Alaska, America West, Delta, FedEx, Northwest, Southwest, TWA, United, UPS, US Airways, Allegheny Airlines/US Airways Express, American Eagle Airlines, American Trans Air, Amerijet, Atlantic Coast, Comair, Continental Express, Executive Jet Aviation, Horizon Air, PSA/US Airways Express, Skyway, Trans States, USA Jet, and many others. The seminar will feature topics on the pilot hiring market, job search planning, pre-employment medical exams, interviewing, written testing, and applications/résumés/cover letters. A 2-hour airline forum and a 3-hour job fair follow the seminar. Southwest Airlines will be sponsoring tours of their training facilities for all seminar attendees, their spouses, and airline reps. following the Job Fair Saturday evening. AIR, Inc. will also be conducting a Flight Attendant and Aircraft Maintenance Technician Seminar and Job Fair Sunday, January 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Six Career Workshops will also be conducted. The first three workshops will be held Friday afternoon & evening, Jan. 19, featuring Military/Airline Transition, Civilian/Airline Transition and CRM. The three remaining workshops held Sunday will cover Airline Interview Survival, Airline Testing/Simulator Checks, and Résumés/Applications. The next seminar is planned for Los Angeles, CA, March 30-April 1, 2001.
