Airlines hired 697 pilots in October, bringing the year-to-date total to 8,976. The National carriers continued strong in October hiring 275 pilots, followed by the Majors with 172, and the Jet Operators, Fractionals, and Non-Jet Operators were neck-and-neck hiring 68, 63, and 62 pilots respectively.

Industry news for the past month ended on a bleak note when Independence Airlines-–FLYi–filed for Chapter 11 protection November 7. CEO Kerry Skeen cited fuel prices and "extreme revenue weakness" among the major culprits for the filing. Pinnacle Airlines is offering a $1,000 signing bonus and a $500 employee referral fee for new pilots.

JetBlue Airways sold an additional 7.5 million shares of stock to the public on November 7. Priced at $18 a share, the sale generated $13.5 million in proceeds for the major airline. JetBlue stock trades on Nasdaq under the stock symbol JBLU.

NetJets’ pilots, represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, reached a tentative contract agreement in October. If ratified, pilots would receive a $833 signing bonus for each month worked since October 2001. In addition, pilots would receive a 40 to 60 percent increase in pay based on years of service and equipment operated. A vote is expected November 21st.
