Airline Pilot Hiring
October 2007 Summary

Airlines hired 1,222 pilots in October, bringing the year-to-date total to 11,139. Hiring numbers dropped slightly from that of last month, however October still came in second in the total amount of pilots hired in one given month since 2001. If the airline industry adds 1,628 pilots in the next two months, it will top the last record-hiring year of 2001, which hired 12,766 pilots. The National carriers hired 605 pilots followed by the Majors airlines with 317and once again the Non-Jet operators placed third adding 109 pilots to their sector.

American Airlines' Allied Pilots Association representatives and AMR Eagle union leaders from the Air Line Pilots Association reached a tentative agreement on October 24 that would preserve seniority for mainline pilots. AMR mainline pilots still on furlough are guaranteed a chance to return to the mainline before opening the existing positions to Eagle pilots. Under the terms of the existing agreement Eagle captains who were on the mainline's seniority list, yet had never flown with them, we able to "flow up" ahead of returning furloughed American pilots. The Allied Pilots Association members are also asking for a 6 percent raise during the 32 months remaining on the contract and a 15 percent signing bonus.

The United Parcel Service hiring window closed on November 15, 2007 and may reopen January 2008 depending on their hiring needs. Once their window reopens all pilots who interviewed in 2007 & received a "pool" letter do not need to reapply. Anyone who received a "reject" letter can reapply after 6 months and all other interested applicants may apply immediately after window opens.

Republic Airways Holdings (RAH) will spend $3 million to train new pilots to replace furloughed US Airways pilots that were flying under the “Jets for Jobs” program that began in 2003. RAH has 80 furloughed pilots currently on its payroll that should be recalled to the mainline between November 2007 and April 2008.

The next AIR, Inc. Job Fair will be held in Dallas, TX on January 26.
