Airline Pilot Hiring
September 06 Summary
More than 700 pilots received jobs within the airline industry in September, bringing the third quarter hiring numbers to 1,918 and the year-to-date numbers to 6,348. The National carriers continued to lead in hiring adding 235 to their pilot sector, followed by the Majors with 199, and the Non-Jet operators finished third with 120.
Three domestic airlines placed aircraft orders in September and early October. Northwest Airlines received permission from the bankruptcy judge to order new jets that will serve small and midsize markets. Wholly-owned subsidiary Compass Airlines, due to launch early 2007, will receive 36 EMB-175s and 36 CRJ-900s will be placed into service with regional affiliates. The order also included options on another 96 Bombardiers and 136 Embraers. Atlas Air placed a $3.4 billion order for 12 B747-8 freighters. Delivery of the aircraft will start in 2010 and will be completed by 2012. FedEx announced that it will be implementing a $2.6 billion, multi-year program to acquire and modify nearly 90 B757-200s to replace its fleet of 94 727-200Fs. The aircraft will be phased into service between 2008 and 2016.
Two major airlines announced pilot recalls. Northwest will be recalling approximately 25 pilots a month starting in November and continuing the recall pace throughout 2007. There are currently 726 on furlough. Delta will be recalling 65 furloughed pilots to support network growth. The pilots will start class in October leaving 389 still on furlough. DAL announced it would also be recalling 200 flight attendants.
The FAA administrator has put together an Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC) to review the Age 60 rule, which will be amended November 23, 2006 by the International Civil Aviation Organization. The ARC will recommend whether the FAA should adopt the ICAO standard that allows airline pilots to fly to age 65.
