Airlines hired a total of 886 pilots in December bringing the year-to-date total for 2007 to 13,157 – 5,000 more jobs that what the airlines forecast last January. For the year, National airlines held the lead hiring post adding 6,831 new crewmembers, followed by major carriers with 2,900, Non-Jet Operators with 1,184, Jet Operators hired 688, Fractionals added 620, and airlines reporting in the Crew Leasing, Foreign, Training, Startups and Very Light Jet categories put 934 new pilots in their flight decks. As the hiring numbers increased the furlough numbers decreased from 6,608 last January to 3,094 the end of December – there are currently 90,970 pilots employed industry wide.

Lufthansa purchased 19% of JetBlue On December 13 Germany’s largest airline, Lufthansa, paid $300 million for a 19 percent stake in JetBlue Airways. JetBlue CEO Dave Barger said the agreement “reaffirms our belief in JetBlue’s disciplined growth plan and will also improve our balance sheet and give us greater financial flexibility as we move into 2008.”

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) estimates that global passenger traffic rose approximately 6.6% in 2007 to 2.2 billion with an overall load factor of 76.5% (versus 75.8% in 2006). Cargo traffic rose about 3.5%, down from a growth rate of 5.5% in 2006.

Northwest Airlines’ pilots are asking management for pension changes. The issue revolves around how benefits are divided between younger and older crewmembers. NWA pilots earn their pensions during the first 25 years of their careers (older pilots have already earned most or all of a full pension). Younger pilots will not earn full benefits and the freeze in NWA’s pensions guarantees that they never will.
