Airline Pilot Hiring
September 06 Summary
Airlines hired 727 pilots in August, the third highest hiring month of the year. The major airlines hired 227 pilots with seven of the 16 carriers expected to hire over the next several months. The national airline segment, the most active group of the year, with the exception of August, hired a total of 225 new pilots. The non-jet operators hired 97 followed by the jet operators hiring 77 pilots for the month.
United Parcel Service (UPS) announced that they will be hiring 300 additional pilots between September and 2007. Most of the new hires will be based at their main hubs in Ontario, California, Miami, and Louisville. In addition the pilots, represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, ratified a four-year contract early September. The new deal includes increases in per diem, hourly pay, and international premium pay, and a 3-percent pay increase every January through 2011. Since the pilots ratified the contract on schedule UPS has also included signing bonuses that range between $34,000 to $60,000 depending on rank.
FedEx pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), reached a tentative labor agreement on August 28. The new deal includes a nine-percent wage increase the first year and a three-percent increase annually during the next three years. The FedEx ALPA Master Executive Council must first approve the terms and conditions of the contract before more information can be released. If ratified, the four-year agreement would become amendable in 2010.
The Air Transport Association (ATA) reported that load factors for U.S. carriers climbed in July to their highest levels since 1980. The load factors for domestic and international travel on major U.S. airlines increased 1.5 percent to 86.9 percent. The ATA also said that mainline revenue rose 6.7 percent led by US Airways with an increase of approximately 15.5% followed by Delta and Northwest both with a 13-percent increase.
Gemini Air Cargo announced August 16 that it had successfully emerged from Chapter 11 after having its reorganization plan approved by the Bankruptcy Court on July 20, 2006. Under the terms of the restructuring agreement Gemini's largest lender, Bayside Capital, agreed to exchange its secured loans for a combination of new indebtedness and a majority ownership of the reorganized company.
