Airline Pilot Hiring
August ’06 Summary

Airlines reporting to AIR, Inc. hired 475 pilots in July, bringing the year-to-date total to 4,860. The National carriers lead in pilot hiring for the seventh straight month adding 168 pilots to their sector, followed by the Majors with 155, and the Non-Jet Operators finished in third, hiring 73 new pilots for the month. AIR, Inc. estimates more than 8,500 new airline pilot jobs will be created in 2006.

US Airways placed a $625 million order in early August for 25 EMB-190s. The 106-seat 190s will replace many of US Airways' 50-seat planes and fly mainly out of Philadelphia. The first jet will be delivered in December 2006.

In its first big addition of new aircraft since 9/11, Delta Air Lines signed a seven-year rental agreement to lease 10 B757-200s. The ex-TWA jets, due for delivery in July 2007, will be used for flights to Hawaii and some regions in Europe.

Continental Airlines (CAL) converted 12 existing firm orders for B-737NGs into 12 B-737-900ERs for delivery in 2008. CAL is the first U.S. carrier to order the B737-900ER, which flies about 500 nautical miles farther than the existing 737-900. The carrier still has firm commitments for 65 B-737NGs and has the ability to convert more of its existing B-737 orders to the -900ER series.

FedEx Express signed an agreement worth $8 billion to transport mail in the U.S. for the Postal Service. FedEx says the seven-year agreement, which replaces a previous contract, takes effect in October 2006.
