The second quarter of ’05 came to a close this past month and brought with it 3,048 new jobs, for a YTD total of 5,251 new pilot positions created so far this year. For the second time in more than two years, Major airlines lead in hiring, adding 237 pilots. The National carriers came in a close second with 230 pilots, followed by Jet Operators with 211 and the Non-Jet sector finished fourth with 150 new pilot jobs. AIR, Inc. estimates over 10,000 new airline pilot jobs will be created in 2005.

The America West/US Airways Merger cleared two important hurdles. The Federal antitrust officials reviewing the America West Airlines/US Airways merger concluded that the move wouldn't reduce competition and could produce efficiencies that benefit consumers. The Justice Department ruled to allow the deal to move forward. US Airways won another key vote when U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Stephen Mitchell gave his nod of approval.

The merger still needs approval from America West shareholders, and the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the federal board that handled government bailout loans made to both airlines after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Once finalized the America West shareholders will control a 39% stake in the merged carrier, US Airways creditors will hold approximately 12%, and the new outside investors will control a 49% stake. Merger completion is expected September or October of this year.
