Airline Pilot Hiring
May 2007 Summary

Airlines reporting to AIR, Inc. hired 1,046 pilots in May. The National carriers were well above the hiring curve adding 614 new crewmembers – this number is short by one in equaling the total number of pilots hired for the month of May in 2006, which was 615. The Majors came in second hiring 148 pilots, followed by the Non-Jet Operators with 108 and Jet Operators hiring 70 pilots for the month. The number of pilots currently furloughed continues to decrease from 6,215 in April to 5,666 in May. AIR, Inc. forecasts approximately 10,000 new airline pilot jobs for 2007.

Northwest Airlines exited bankruptcy protection May 31. It's new business plan calls for the carrier to post profits through 2010 even if oil continues to trade at current levels. The airline shed about $4.2 billion in debt and $2.4 billion in annual costs. It also announced a plan to modernize its fleet of jetliners.

AirTran Airways and its pilots, represented by the National Pilots' Association (NPA), reached a tentative 48-month collective bargaining agreement with its 1,500 crewmembers. If ratified, NPA's Board of Directors has thirty days to accept or decline the offer. The new contract will initially increase pilot hourly pay to $160.60 per flight hour for 12-year captains from $152.57, and to $83.30 from $78.37 per flight hour for 7-year first officers. The new contract would also improve pilot pensions by i
ncreasing the company's 401(k) match to two percent by the end of the contract. If ratified the contract will take effect July 1, 2007 and will be amendable on June 30, 2011.

JetBlue named Dave Barger the new CEO in May. David Neeleman was elected non-executive Board Chairman.

The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), the nation's largest pilots union, announced that it would support raising the retirement age of pilots to 65 from 60. The FAA said this year that it would issue new rules within two years extending the retirement age by five years. The House and Senate are considering legislation that would require the FAA to extend the retirement age sooner.
