Airline Pilot Hiring
April 2007 Summary

Airlines hired a total of 1,160 pilots in April, the highest single month total since July 2005. National airlines hired the majority of pilots adding 562 new crewmembers, followed by Major carriers with 229, Non-Jet Operators with 135, and airlines reporting in the Crew Leasing, foreign, Training, and Very Light Jet category added 69. Major airlines forecast hiring approximately 2,300 pilots in ’07. Out of the 90,970 total active pilots, 6,215 are currently on furlough- a significant difference from the 8,458 that were on furlough this time last year.

Delta Air Lines (DAL) survived 19 months of bankruptcy and a hostile takeover bid from U.S. Airways to exit Chapter 11 on April 30, 2007. William Greene of Morgan Stanley said that DAL “has the potential to be one of the most profitable airlines in the U.S.” DAL’s total debt, excluding pension funds, has been reduced from $17 billion to $7 billion; annual revenue has increased from $16.2 billion to $18.5 billion; employee numbers has been reduced from 53,000 to 47,000; and the fleet has been cut from 527 to 446 aircraft. DAL reported a first quarter 2007 net loss of $130 million versus a $2.1 billion loss during the same quarter in ’06.

In mid-April Northwest Airlines (NWA) sent recall notices to the remaining 451 pilots on furlough. "This is a welcome milestone for Flight Ops and for the airline," said Vice President/SOC of Flight Operations Administration. "The success of the airline’s restructuring has provided us with the opportunity to offer all furloughed pilots a chance to return to NWA much earlier than anyone planned.”

U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters believes a U.S.-China “open skies” agreement would be a mutual benefit to both countries. Peters is meeting with high-ranking Chinese aviation officials to lay the groundwork for negotiations. Attempting to start “open skies” negotiations in the East, FAA Administrator Marion Blakey says a new cooperation agreement between the U.S. and India would help India deal with their rapidly expanding airline industry.

Start-up carrier Skybus Airlines will launch operations on May 22, Northwest Airlines announced it will recall the remaining 451 pilots on furlough, and AirTran increased its bid to purchase Midwest Airlines to $389 million, up from $345 million.
