Airlines hired a total of 921 pilots in March. National airlines hired the majority of pilots adding 393 new crewmembers, followed by Major carriers with 310, Non-Jet Operators with 101, and Fractional companies with 53. Out of the 90,970 pilots employed industry wide, 6,292 are currently on furlough – there were 8,499 on furlough this time last year.

UPS reopened their pilot-hiring window early April. New minimums for pilots include 1,500 TT fixed/wing, 1,000 PIC fixed-wing jet/turboprop, 500 PIC/SIC in transport aircraft, PIC/SIC transoceanic crossing experience, ATP or COMM/INST/ME, RTOP, Class I medical, valid passport and a BA degree is preferred. ATA Airlines’ parent company has changed its name to Global Aero Logistics and will purchase World Air Holdings, the parent of World Airways and North American Airlines, for $315 million in cash. Each airline will continue to operate as an independent airline and under its own name. The deal is expected to be finalized in the third quarter of 2007.

On March 12 Continental Airlines (CAL) ordered 5 additional B-787-9s, bringing their 787 aircraft order total to 17 B-787-9s and 8 B-787-8s. CAL now has 25 B-787-8s on order.

Virgin Receives Tentative Approval Virgin America, a start-up airline backed by Sir Richard Branson, received tentative approval from the Transportation Department to launch operations this summer. To finalize the deal Virgin must restructure its financing to meet foreign ownership regulations and replace current CEO Frederick Reid. Virgin plans to operate between the East and West Coasts using a fleet of A-319/320s.
