Airline Pilot Hiring
January ’06 Summary

The airline industry kicked off the new year by hiring 762 pilots in January, only two pilots less than same period in 2005. The National airlines added 290 pilots, followed by the Majors with 224, the Jet Operators with 98, the Fractional division hired 81, and the Non-Jet sector put an additional 62 crewmembers into their flight decks.

United Airlines (UAL) won approval for its reorganization plan on January 20, which set the stage for its emergence from Chapter 11 on February 1. UAL signed a 6-year, $3 billion financing loan with JPMorgan, CitiGroup, and GE Capital, which included a $300 million revolving line of credit and a $2.7 billion term loan. UAL recalled 50 pilots in January, 25 in April and 20 in May.

FlexJet, a fractional ownership carrier, announced that they would be hiring between 50 and 60 pilots in the next two months. In November it placed an order for 15 Lear 60XRs. FlexJet hired 108 pilots in ’05.

Virgin America, Sir Richard Branson’s American start-up carrier, filed its certification application with the FAA on January 19. It already filed with the Department of Transportation last December. "We would like to see the process accelerate in a reasonable time frame," said CEO Fred Reid. Reid added that unit costs would be 25%-50% lower than those of current legacy airlines. Virgin America anticipates launching transcontinental service later this year.

World Airways pilots, represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, reached a tentative contract February 6 ending a nine-day strike. The agreement provides improvements in job security, retirement benefits, life insurance, wages and other benefits.

AIR, Inc.’s first Job Fair of the year in DFW last month was a huge success! 550 pilots met with over 100 recruiters from 35 airlines - Air Wisconsin, Pinnacle, PSA, FlexJet, and WASINC were conducting on-site interviews during the Job Fair.
