Airline pilot hiring started out strong this year hiring 867 pilots in January. National airlines lead in hiring with 393 new pilot positions. The Major airline sector came in second with 297 new jobs. The Non-Jet Operators followed in third, hiring 68 pilots for the month. Out of the 102,085 pilots employed industry wide, 6,608 are currently on furlough. AIR, Inc. estimates up to 8,500 new airline pilot jobs will be created in 2007 - Major airlines forecast hiring approximately 2,300 pilots this year.

On January 31 US Airways withdrew its bid to purchase Delta Air Lines (DAL). Investors for DAL said the bankrupt airline would be better off emerging from Chapter 11 as a stand-alone carrier. AirTran Airways raised its offer to buyout Midwest Airlines to $345 million, up 19% from its original offer of $290 million.

Northwest Airlines announced it would purchase feeder carrier Mesaba Airlines for $145 million, due to creditors, and $10 million cash for operating costs. Mesaba, which has been in bankruptcy since October 2005, currently operates as Northwest Airlink.

On January 18, 2007 Pinnacle Airlines announced the purchase of Virginia-based Colgan Air. Pinnacle will pay $20 million for all stock, which includes $10 million in cash. Colgan is a regional carrier that operates as Continental Express, United Express, and US Airways Express.

For the first time since 2000 American Airlines posted a fourth-quarter profit of $17 million, compared to a $600 million net loss during the same period last year.
