Common Site & Computer FAQs

JET-JOBS.COM SITE BASICS: This site has been tested on both Mac and PC browsers, with various modem speeds and should be compatible with all version 3 or better browsers and result in quick download time. Note: If you are using AOL and experience any viewing problems, simply open up an alternate browser such as Netscape or Explorer after you have connected to the Web via your AOL software. As an AOL user, you have access to both!

The first screen you will see when logging onto jet-jobs.com is known as our "entry page." This page is mainly for first-time guests to our site. The second page (the weather map screen) is our navigation page to get you where you want to go. WANT THE QUICKEST WAY TO ACCESS THE INFORMATION YOU WANT? Simply go to the member’s or guest section and BOOKMARK it for future, quick access!

AIR, Inc. will continuously work to improve the quality of the site, along with the best in information.

LINKS? - When your cursor changes over to a pointing hand as you mouse over images and words, that indicates that they are live links and are clickable for information. If you find an outdated link, please contact us at airinfo@airapps.com.

Why does my browser not reflect changes and updates that you make to your site? This is a pretty common question. The answer lies in your browser's settings. Initially, you can try reloading/refreshing the page, but if the problem persists, then the answer is to reset your computer cache settings to cause it to interpret/read the information on a more frequent basis. The best setting is usually every couple of days to one week as opposed to several weeks.

How can I receive a notice telling me when you updated your site last? First keep in mind, if you are a member and simply want to know when anything in the member's area has been updated, you can look on the main page that loads in the member section. It lists all online publications and dates when they were updated online last. If using Netscape or IE, there are ways of telling when sites you visit do get updated. They work as follows:

If using Netscape, to find out if a bookmarked page has been modified since your last viewing:

  1. Click Bookmarks and choose Edit Bookmarks. (On Mac OS, open the Communicator menu and choose Bookmarks).
  2. Select one or more bookmarks. If you want to check all bookmarks, don't select any.
  3. Open the View menu and choose Update Bookmarks.
  4. Click All Bookmarks or Selected Bookmarks.
  5. Click Start Checking.

If a page has changed, Navigator puts a special mark on the page's bookmark icon. If Navigator is unable to verify a page, it puts a question mark on the page's icon.

If using Internet Exporer, subscribe in IE4 - 5. Subscriptions bring up-to-date Web content to you. When you subscribe to a site, Internet Explorer checks for new content, according to the schedule you specify. You can then choose either to be notified that there is new content available or have the updated content automatically download to your computer (for example, at night or when your computer is idle) so that you can view the pages at your convenience. Subscribing to a Web site does not require paying fees to the site.

You can schedule when you want to check for new content, and how you want to be notified of new content. You can also set up custom schedules and notify settings for individual sites.

How can I be added to your e-mail notification list? We have two email lists here at AIR, Inc. The first is our AIRNotam List. This list is for AIR members and subscribers only. These notices inform you when the online ALPC magazine or APJM newsletter are updated and special hot hiring news items are released.

The second list is our AIRAnnouncement list. This list provides information about airlines who have just signed up for our current seminar. You'll also receive notices of specials and discounts.

Help! I'm having a problem viewing certain pages on your site, what can I do? See the following section on Site Design to view all software and plug-ins used on this site. Also, please note that some features on jet-jobs.com do not work with standard browser installations. You will need to enhance the capabilities of your browser by installing "plug-ins."

How do I know if it is safe to use my credit card to order using an online store? The jet-jobs.com online pilot store is SECURE. Any credit card or personal information is encrypted and cannot easily be intercepted by any outside party. All sales from our store go straight to AIR, Inc.'s Sales and customer service department for immediate processing. So ordering online at jet-jobs.com is easy, safe, and right at your fingertips! (Note: You are actually at a greater risk by giving your credit card information over a cell phone or to a sales clerk in person!)

There are ways of telling on your browser if the store you are in is secure or not. If you are using Netscape version 4+, you will notice a lock at the lower left-hand corner of your screen. This lock will be unlocked when you are in a non-secure store and locked and glowing when you are in a safe, secure store. Netscape version 3 uses a complete key and a broken key to indicate these conditions. If using Internet Explorer, you will notice a blue line appear at the top of your screen or a key in the lower left-hand corner of your browser. The AIR, Inc. Online Pilot Career Store will always open in a separate browser for convenient online shopping. Find out why so many pilots choose to order our products and services through jet-jobs.com's Pilot Store...

Does it matter if I view your site with a PC or a MAC? Not at all, but remember when viewing with a PC, colors tend to show up a bit darker and font sizes a bit bigger. However, it all relates back to your personal browswer settings! Remember, you have control over your personal monitor (screen viewing) settings.

This site is designed to be user-friendly and 3-dimensional. To date, most users have version 3 or higher of Internet Explorer or Netscape 3 or higher. Browsers designed earlier than these versions will not correctly interpret most advanced display features, such as scrolling text, animation, and other design features. They will however, support all links, display of text, and page functionality.

This site uses a cookie on the entry page. Cookies are text files on your hard drive that store a server-assigned value which allows the Web site to forward you to another page or to track your progress through their site. PDF stands for Portable Document Format and is widely used by more than 250,000 companies on the Web today in order to distribute documents electronically. It does require you to have the FREE Adobe Acrobat Reader installed in your computer. The download is free at http://www.adobe.com. The site describes system requirements and explains how to install the software plug-ins, plus it has a troubleshooting section and offers free technical support.

You also can read about using the PDF viewer and personalizing its navigation options to set up and view documents how you wish. Adobe Acrobat Reader's navigation and it's zoom-in features allow you to view the documents, including images and text, closer. PDF files can be viewed clean and easy and printed one page at a time.

TIPS from AIR, Inc.'s Web Editor:

Q: Why do I sometimes need to hit the Reload button to see the latest version of a Web page? While browsing the WEB, you actually download files from other computers all over the world into your computer. When these files are downloaded, your computer displays them to you. This downloading process takes some time, especially if you connect to the internet through a modem, or telephone line.

Netscape or Internet Explorer use a tool they call "cache." As you visit different pages on the Web, your browser stores it in its cache. If you return to the same page, your browser checks the cache to see if the file is there. If it is, the browser displays that file, instead of going to the Web and having to download it all over again.

The biggest advantage is increasing your speed. Reading a file from your cache is quicker than reading it directly off the Web. So if you return to a site frequently, it will be displayed to you more quickly, because you are reading from the cache.

The disadvantage is when the page changes. Keep in mind that if the Web copy of the page changes, your browser may not be aware of the change and will continue to show you the old file from the (stored) cache. You can use the "Reload" button. This will force the browser to read from the Internet site instead of your cache. Additionally, you can reset your cache.

If you have available disk space, adjust the maximum cache size to a higher value in your browser's preferences. This will keep more information in the cache for a longer period of time. Once your cache fills up, your browser starts removing the oldest files from the cache.

Is it possible to allow my browser to "surf" (view) your site faster?
Yes! By increasing your browser's disk cache you can speed up your surfing! If you have some excess disk space you can increase the size of what we call browser disk "cache". Cache is like a storage in your computer that stores items from each site you visit, like an outline. The higher number of graphics stored in the cache, the more pages you can return to or reload without having to wait on graphics to download all over again. Refer to the following:

Internet Explorer 3.0:
Preferences / Advanced
Navigator:
Network Preferences / Cache

BROWSERS

There are eight commonly used browsers. Netscape, Internet Explorer, Mozilla, (both for Mac and PC users) and Safari (Mac-only). AOL also has a wide range of capabilities entirely dependent on the version and platform of AOL you are using. Note: If you are an AOL user, you still have access to opening a different browser, such as Netscape or Explorer. We recommend you do this to view jet-jobs.com.

To view this site the best, we recommend you have version 3 or higher. Most Web sites are now using a variety of features requiring you to have one of these versions. Otherwise your browser may misinterpret information and functionality of the page you are viewing and will almost certainly not activate the function features. Keep in mind each browser has its own differences in how it will interpret and display each Web page. To assure quality on AIR, Inc's site and optimize the best in viewing for you, we test all pages in all eight browsers.

As a general rule of thumb, browsers can vary regarding color, font size and type, alignment of graphics, printing of pages, anchors (returning to the top of a page or index) and functions. Additionally, this also varies depending on using a Mac or a PC.

If I am visiting a site that I really liked and forgot to bookmark, is there any way to find out what URL it was?
As a matter of fact, yes! So you can breathe a sigh of relief. If you forgot to bookmark one of your favorite Web sites, (even if it has been several days that you have not looked at it on your broswer), and even without the use of your search engine, you can simply look through your cache! Navigator will store a copy of every Web page and image on your hard drive. It will empty according to the preferences you have it set to. Of course, if you have your cache turned off, you're out of luck. Specifically, to locate a URL and/or cache file names, you can type "about:cache" in the LOCATION BOX and then hit return. Navigator should display a list of Disk Cache Statistics showing all of your recent visits. If you want to display only the URLs of the cache files, enter "about:global" instead and it should list the sites. Remember, the data retrieved relies on the amount of cache you've set up in your browser. Hence, the number of items and dates will vary at times. In Internet Explorer you can View->ExplorerBar->History which brings up a breakdown of your history. You can set the options (how many days history to hold) in the Internet Options.

We recommend you contact your personal ISP (Internet Service Provider) for further questions regarding your browser or internet service. If you have jet-jobs site related questions or ideas, please e-mail them to the Web-Editor.
